Brig. Gen. Julian D. Alford assumed command of Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune at the Goettge Memorial Field House on Aug. 7. Alford is returning for his fifth tour and 13th year on the base.

“This is like coming home,” said Alford. “My son was born on this base so I have a lot of good memories here.”

After the assumption of command, Col. Michael L. Scalise returned to his position as deputy commander of Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

“General Alford comes from the Warfighting Lab and has a reputation as a warfighter,” said Scalise. “He knows Camp Lejeune very well. He’s had many years there so he knows the Marine Expeditionary Force, the ranges, he knows the people, the personalities, and he’s coming here with all of the right tools to support the needs of our tenant organizations.”

Alford came to Camp Lejeune from the Marine Corps War Fighting Lab Future Directorate in Quantico, Virginia where he served as its commanding general.

“You’re getting a 32-year infantry officer who’s been there and done that all over the world, so I think you’re going to see him latch on very quickly,” said Col. Thomas Bruno, chief of staff of MCIEAST-MCB Camp Lejeune. “He said it right here, he’s going to support the MEF and he’s going to support the United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command so it cuts out all the confusion.”

Alford said he looks forward to taking charge of the installations and ensuring they’re prepared to support the MEF.

“When you’re in charge of Marines it’s always a good thing, the reason this command exists is to support this MEF,” said Alford. “Our job is to make sure the Marines of the
MEF have a safe place to live, and a good
place to train and to prepare for war.”
