Senior Master Sgt. Sean D. Woodson was promoted to the rank of Chief Master Sgt. Saturday, August 12, 2017. Woodson's promotion marks a historic milestone at the 179th AW as he will be the first African-American to attain the rank Chief Master Sergeant here.
Wing Commander Col. James R. Camp said "This unit turns 70 years old in June 2018. This organization is 69 years old and Chief Woodson is our first African-American chief and that is a big deal".
Woodson is the 179th Airlift Wing First Sergeant where he is responsible for the morale, welfare, and conduct of all the enlisted members and is the chief adviser to the commander concerning the enlisted force.
State Command Chief Master Sgt. Thomas Jones said "There are only 15 Chief Master Sgt. First Sergeant's in the entire U.S. Air Force and today Chief Woodson will add his name to that list.
"Wow, I am truly humbled and honored to be here, I did not imagine this. My long term goal was to do 20, make Master Sergeant and retire" said Woodson. "I appreciate leadership taking the time to mentor and guide me. I did not do this by myself, making this rank, it takes a village, leadership, mentors, etc., I did not get here by myself".
Woodson first joined the U.S. Air Force in 1994, serving 10 years on active duty where he served as a Supply Management Journeyman, Supply System Analyst, Small Computer Supervisor and a System Analyst Supervisor. He then transitioned to the Ohio Air National Guard in 2004 to the 179th Logistics Readiness Squadron as a Supply System Analyst.
During his 20 year career, Chief Master Sgt. Woodson has participated in stateside and overseas deployments to include Operation Enduring Freedom and the Global War on Terrorism.
