Klipper’s hosted the Summer Bash at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course and Tiki Island aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii, July 28, 2017.
This was the ninth annual Summer Bash held by the Klipper Golf Course to help strengthen the sense of community amongst the residents of MCB Hawaii.
“It promotes camaraderie of everyone on base, and it’s also an opportunity for Marine Corps Community Services to give back to the Marine Corps,” said Kevin Kashiwai, the golf operations manager for the Klipper golf course. “It’s not really our normal retail type of event; it’s more of giving back to the public.”
Kashiwai said the event began a few years ago and wasn’t known as the Summer Bash.
“It started off as a grand reopening of the pro shop,” Kashiwai said. “But it was such a huge hit that we just brought it back and renamed it the Klipper Summer Bash.”
Jenny Hahn, a lead recreation assistant at Klipper Golf Course, said the Summer Bash provides people an opportunity to explore the Klipper Golf Course.
“It brings in a lot of people who normally wouldn’t come up here to this facility,” Hahn said. “It gives them a chance to check it out, and maybe inspire some future golfers.”
Hahn said this year’s event was a little different from the previous years.
“We had a sponsor with the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) that sponsored the rides, bounce houses, and all of the other activities for the children,” Hahn said. “In the past attendees would pay a small fee for a bracelet to enter, but this year it was free for the families and their children.”
Marines volunteered and provided help with the children’s activities at the Summer Bash.
“I feel great volunteering for this,” said Cpl. Treyvon Chambers, an administrative specialist with Headquarters Battalion. “I love being around the kids, the atmosphere, and helping where I’m needed.”
Kashiwai said the size of the Summer Bash has grown every year since it started.
“We haven’t had an airshow or bay festival in sometime, so it’s kind of become the big event on base now,” he said. “We’re very proud of it and really glad to host it every year.”
