U.S. Marines with 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion participated in Large Scale Exercise-17 to demonstrate the capabilities of Regimental Combat Team-8 at Twentynine Palms, California, Aug. 15-21.
LSE-17 is a multinational exercise, led by 2nd Marine Division, with elements from the United Kingdom, France, Canada and II Marine Expeditionary Force, focused on integrating all capabilities of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force and coalition forces.
LSE-17 is an opportunity for the Marines of 3rd LAR Bn. to maintain proficiency in their individual position within the vehicle and forces them to perform in a stressful combat simulated environment.
“This is the basic foundation of all of their gunnery training,” said GySgt. Lloyd Grover, the battalion master gunner with 3rd LAR. “It helps them advance to higher levels of training within their sections.”
The battalion is using the exercise to prepare for an upcoming deployment to Okinawa, Japan.
“This training is benefiting the Marines by preparing them for deployment,” said Sgt. Matthew Jacobs, the assistant battalion master gunner. “This allows them to qualify as a crew and be able to accurately operate their weapon systems.”
During LSE-17, 3rd LAR Bn. conducted multiple live-fire ranges, conducted qualifications and established forward positions. Other training events included mass casualty drills, recovery of vehicles and fire and maneuver drills.
“The skills they learn out here are the building blocks for them to integrate into sections, platoons, and even company level operations,” said Grover. “Without this they wouldn’t be as effective anywhere else.”
