U.S. Marines from 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, and 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, both with Regimental Combat Team-8, conducted a live-fire range during Large Scale Exercise-17 at Twentynine Palms, Calif., Aug. 15-18, 2017.
LSE-17 is a multinational exercise, led by 2nd Marine Division, with elements from the United Kingdom, France, Canada and II Marine Expeditionary Force, focused on integrating all capabilities of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force and coalition forces.
“As a whole, our battalion captured two simulated objectives during a mechanized attack and held a defensive position for three days,” said Cpl. Kyle Hansen, a squad leader with 1/1. “The battalion held the objective in order to successfully defend against an enemy attack and later conduct a counter-attack.”
1/1 fully integrated with 2nd AAB, using their amphibious assault vehicles for transportation and conducting movements and live-fire side-by-side.
“I believe this training helps the Marines not only physically, but mentally as well” said Hansen. “It gets them mentally prepared for the fact that we may have to stay dug in to the defense for a couple of days in order to repel the enemy.”
The Marines utilized multiple weapon systems, including tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided missiles, 60mm mortars, M777 howitzers, M203 and MK-19 grenade launchers, M2 .50cal and M240b machine guns, M16A4s, and M4 Carbines.
“You have to be mentally tough to endure the heat out here,” said Lance Cpl. Hector Depaz, an assistant team leader with 1/1. “Training like this is always a rigorous strain on the body but in the long run it gets us prepared to take the fight to the enemy.”
The units participated in LSE-17 in preparation for their upcoming deployment with 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
