CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan – Service members can change up their workouts with MixxedFit at Gunner’s Gym aboard Camp Foster.
MixxedFit is a fitness program offered twice a week, that uses dancing to burn calories and challenge service members’ endurance.
“It’s fun and easy to follow with no complicated movement,” said Queenne Olazo, a group fitness instructor at Gunner’s Gym. “It is a people-inspired, dance-fitness program that combines toning and hip hop. The key is exaggeration, fun, and to be explosive.”
MixxedFit is nonstop movement, dancing through one song to the next. The more students move, the more calories they burn and their endurance improves.
“It is the disguise exercise,” said Olazo. “They don’t know it but as they are dancing they are doing some toning, jumping jacks, and squats but at the same time having fun.”
MixxedFit provides service members with the opportunity to break up the monotony of distance running.
“The class plays great music and I’m sweating by the end of it,” said Lt. j.g. Gloria Oakman, a staff registered nurse with 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “This is a great way to get a cardio workout in without running or the elliptical.”
A workout does not have to be the mundane or same old weights and running that is repeated every day. Fitness can be explosive with dance and music.
“I always struggle with cardio and going to the gym in general but this is a fun workout and I feel like you get a lot of exercise from doing it,” said Oakman. “I do this twice a week. It doesn’t feel like a workout, it just feels like you’re dancing. I really love it.”
The times and days for the class can be found at www.mccsokinawa.com/groupfitness or call Gunner’s Gym at 645-3985 or 098-970-3985.
