Construction is underway on the new Access Control Point (ACP) that will replace the current Gate 20 at Fort McCoy.

A $9.9 million contract for the new construction was awarded in May to Catamount Constructors Inc. of Lakewood, Colo., said Ken Green, construction representative and mechanical engineering technician with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), which is managing the contract.

“The contract duration is for 540 calendar days, which has the project’s contract completion date set for November 2018,” Green said.

The project description shows construction includes the building of a new identification check area with a new gatehouse; search office; inspection canopies; and development and construction of new roadways, parking, lighting, and traffic control signals.

There will be physical security items built into the project, too. This includes passive and active vehicle barriers with comprehensive control systems as well as security fencing, information systems, fire protection and alarm systems, and installation of an Intrusion Detection System.

Additionally, all buildings will be made of permanent construction materials with reinforced concrete foundations, concrete floor slabs, and reinforced concrete or masonry walls, Green said.

“The design for all the buildings constructed at the ACP calls for those buildings to have a minimum life of 50 years,” Green said. “The buildings are also designed to have many energy efficiencies built in.”

Active construction on the project area, which is near the Regional Training Site-Medical and Medical Simulation Training Center areas, began in June and is still in ground-preparation phase.

Fort McCoy has supported America’s armed forces since 1909. The installation's motto is to be the “Total Force Training Center.” The post's varied terrain, state-of-the-art ranges, new as well as renovated facilities, and extensive support infrastructure, combine to provide military personnel with an environment in which to develop and sustain the skills necessary for mission success.

Today, Fort McCoy has become the Army's premier Total Force Training Center for Army Early Response Force early deployers to meet the Army's operational demand requirements.
