FORT LEE, Va. (Aug. 24, 2017) -- First Lt. Khristen K. Murdock is operating on a sense of urgency and redemption upon being selected to attend the Army Trial Camp for Women’s Softball that concludes Sept. 17 at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa.
The Bravo Company, 266th Quartermaster Battalion, Soldier has come to realize her competitive softball-playing days are in short supply considering her current duties as a company executive officer and a looming ticket-punch as a company commander.
She also burns to make up for getting the ax during last year’s camp also held at FIG.
Getting an invite for this year’s camp is a unique opportunity that brings to light her past experiences and future endeavors, she said.
“It’s an opportunity to go back and pretty much prove to myself I was supposed to be a part of that team last year,” said the 24-year-old former Claflin University player.
Soldiers are invited to the trial camp based on playing experience and other criteria.
Murdock, who made it to the camp’s second round of cuts last year, said she was the fastest player in the trials and hit between .500-.700 at the plate. This year she feels more confident about her chances.
“Last year, I didn’t know what to expect,” said the outfielder. “This year I pretty much know who the coaches are and what their looking for, and I feel like I’ve had enough experience to show them I can make this team.”
If she secures a roster spot, Murdock thinks it will reverberate as a unique achievement.
“Softball has always been a part of my life,” she said. “I’ve played since I was 5 years old. It would mean the world to me other than my job in the Army. I feel like it would impact the battalion, the brigade and my family.”
It has been at least five years since the last Fort Lee Soldier was invited to the softball trial camp.
Those who make the All Army squad will represent the service in the Armed Forces Women’s Softball Championship scheduled Sept. 18-24 at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.
