Navy corpsmen from 2nd Medical Battalion conducted an en-route care training exercise to hone their medical skills at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Aug. 24, 2017.
The exercise was conducted to prepare the corpsmen to care for casualties during transport to a higher level of medical care in a combat environment simulation.
“We are training the corpsmen to effectively care for a patient in the back of an aircraft and become familiar with a different environment,” said Lt. Cmdr. Danilo Garcia-Duenas, the exercise coordinator with 2nd Medical Battalion. “It’s very important we are able to provide the same level of care in an aircraft as we would be able to on the ground.”
The corpsmen became familiar with obstacles they may face during a real-world medical evacuation in flight.
“You have difficulty hearing while in the aircraft, so you have to learn to communicate with your partner other ways in order to do your job,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Allison Caudill, a corpsman with the unit. “You’re also required to wear additional gear since you’re in an aircraft, so you have to be mindful of where everything is. It’s just something you have to get used to.”
During the exercise, the corpsmen used a high-tech mannequin that simulates a heart rate and breathing, allowing them to practice different techniques to care for casualties during air transport.
This training is designed to not only test the corpsmen’s skills, but to expose them to friction points when aiding casualties in a combat environment as well, further preparing them for real-world operations.
