MARINE CORPS AIR STATAION IWAKUNI, Japan (Aug. 28, 2017) – U.S. Marines, sailors, Department of Defense employees and civilians are conducting cyber security training at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Aug. 14 – Sept. 1, 2017, as part of the Communication Training Center 3’s, or CTC 3’s Security+ course.
This training certifies individuals in the essential principals for network and risk management – an essential stepping stone of an Information Technology security career.
“Everything in this world is beginning to connect with each other,” said U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Jason Downey, a cyber-network instructor with CTC 3. “If we don’t learn how to protect each other it could potentially place us in a bad situation.”
Usually service members, DoD Employees and civilians travel on temporary additional duty to Camp Hanson, Okinawa, Japan, for this training, but Marine Corps Community Services, reached out to CTC 3 and requested support to hold classes at MCAS Iwakuni.
“It’s more convenient to have the training here,” said U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. David Guerrero-Sanchez, an aviation logistics information management system specialist with Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242. “It helps because I’m the only one with a job like mine in my shop.”
CTC 3 trains Marines assigned within the United States Pacific Command, which are responsible for 2,000 level core-plus tactical communication and ground electronics maintenance training and readiness events. They conduct formal programs of instruction in order to ensure commanders at all levels have the capability to exert command and control throughout an operational environment.
“The biggest threat to cyber security is the user’s lack of knowledge,” said Sanchez. “It’s important to know how to stay safe and less vulnerable to attack.”
