Three firefighters from Kirtland Air Force Base competed in the first New Mexico Fire Muster charity event at the Balloon Fiesta Park.
The event benefitted the Firefighter Survivors Fund, which aids ill or injured firefighters in paying for medical bills. The event consisted of a firefighter combat challenge, a five kilometer run, a longest golf drive challenge, and a car and motorcycle show.
Michael Woods, the chief of Station 3 at Kirtland, along with firefighter Marcos Adame, and Senior Airman Dion Everett, competed for Team Kirtland against 10 other teams. Despite having short notice to prepare for the competition, the team came in fourth place.
“We set up a team two weeks prior to the event, and we were competing against teams that have been doing those challenges for years,” said Woods. “We wanted to be a part of it and build more of a relationship with our brothers and sisters in the community.”
The team plans to compete again at next year’s Muster and is hoping that more military teams from New Mexico come to the competition.
