SAN DIEGO – The 36th annual Commander, Naval Surface Force Pacific (CNSP) Surface Line Week (SLW) overall champion was announced, Aug. 26 during the 2017 Surface Warrior Ball.

USS Boxer (LHD 4) took first place, rising victorious over 35 participating commands from the San Diego waterfront.

The teams and individuals competed from Aug. 17-21 in 33 events that included a variety of seamanship and sporting events.

“I am proud of the Boxer team; it is a winning one, and success is addictive,” said Capt. Benjamin J. Allbritton, Boxer’s commanding officer. “The Boxer crew came together with a common goal: to dominate. We are going to channel that same enthusiasm, focus, and commitment to everything we do as we make our ship combat ready during the upcoming training phase.“

Boxer also took first place in the Large Command category, and then was ranked against the winners of the Small and Medium Command categories before being announced as the overall winner.

“My priority was to show some Boxer pride; it was all about showing our spirit and taking home a win,” said Lt. j.g. Montesanti, Boxer’s SLW coordinator. “My biggest hope for this tournament is increasing morale aboard Boxer.”

Boxer’s SLW flag football team recently took first place in the Gator Week competition, and was ready to take the field against some of the best teams from the San Diego Surface community. Led by Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Charles Ellis, Boxer also claimed first place in the SLW Large Command flag football tournament.

“Boxer taking home first place proved that we are a force to be reckoned with on the San Diego waterfront,” said Ellis. “We won first place in Gator Week and we decided to carry on to make Boxer proud and do the same for Surface Line Week.”

Boxer Sailors placed in the following events:
Billiards: 1st place and 2nd place
    Cake Baking: 2nd place
    Functional Fitness “Helen”: Top Male
Golf: 1st place, 3rd place, longest drive and closest to pin
    Medical Stretcher Bearer: 1st place
    Large Command Basketball: 2nd place
    Large Command Soccer: 1st place
    Large Command Softball: 3rd place
    Large Command Volleyball: 1st place
    Lathe Operation: 3rd place

SLW is an annual competition hosted by CNSP for San Diego based Surface commands. Since 1981, each year, Sailors, Marines, and Department of the Navy civilian employees associated with the Surface community come together to compete in both athletic and professional events and build camaraderie along the waterfront.

Boxer is currently in its homeport undergoing a phased-maintenance availability.
