The Let’s Connect Shaw Committee is scheduled to host a free “Let’s Connect Shaw- Woman’s Mentorship Group” lunch and learn at the Palmetto Chapel Annex, July 27 at 11 a.m.
The event is intended to develop Airmen by providing an opportunity for mentorship from women to women.
“There’s less women (than men) in the military, even at Shaw,” said Master Sgt. Erika Vasquez, 20th Equipment Maintenance Squadron assistant fabrication flight chief and Let’s Connect Shaw Committee member, explaining why the program was created. “We didn’t see any forums outside of professional development and things that squadrons offer that the wing has geared specifically toward women.”
Airman 1st Class Cynthia Getsinger, 20th Logistics Readiness Squadron material management journeyman who plans to attend the event, said having a female mentor or leader is important because it opens up opportunities to talk to another female who has been in the same situation with similar struggles and has succeeded, whereas males may have a different viewpoint and different experiences.
During the event, Airmen will be able to speak with a panel of four Shaw female leaders about balancing their work and personal lives, which Vasquez said is important for Airmen to stay resilient.
By helping to develop Airmen, event mentors will be aligning themselves with the Airmen aspect of the 20th Fighter Wing commander’s enduring priorities.
“I think the panel will help them grow not only as an individual, Airman, NCO, or otherwise, but it will help them lead and help grow those junior beneath them,” said Vasquez.
All Team Shaw members are welcome to attend the lunch and learn.
The Women’s Mentorship Group is scheduled to host monthly lunch and learns on the last Thursday of every month at the Chapel Annex at 11 a.m. and a single female Airmen dinner at 6 p.m., to sign up for an event, contact 20FW.Lets.Connect@us.af.mil.
