Members of the Fort McCoy community and distinguished visitors gathered at South Post Housing on Aug. 24, 2017, to officially open 56 new homes for Army Families during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at one of the new houses.
The installation accepted the new ranch-style homes in early July, and Army Families have been steadily moving in to them since. The addition of the 56 new units brings the total to 113 homes available at the housing area.
The ceremony was led by Director Liane Haun with the Directorate of Public Works (DPW), and Maj. Gen. Patrick J. Reinert, commanding general of the 88th Regional Support Command and Fort McCoy’s senior commander, provided remarks during the event.
Haun celebrated the opportunity to expand the post’s housing capabilities.
“Thank you for being here today so we can open these beautiful new homes for Army Families,” Haun said. “I would like to publicly thank Carlson Construction of Joliet, Ill., who constructed these beautiful homes. … I would also like to thank Nathan Butts and Ken Green (with) the Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District office and the Fort McCoy Housing Office, who were instrumental in this effort every single day.”
Haun recalled the effort to build new homes at Fort McCoy between 1998 and 2012 that brought 57 new homes to the post over those years. And now, with the new homes, she said it shows the service’s commitment to improve quality of life at the installation.
“To me this demonstrates the Army’s commitment to Army Families by providing them with quality housing,” Haun said.
Reinert said having the new homes come to Fort McCoy “has been a long time coming.” He noted a 2010 Army Housing Market Analysis that determined Fort McCoy has a housing requirement of 134 units based on personnel needs for housing and how the Army Corps of Engineers and others worked to improve the housing at the post.
“Here in 2017, we nearly doubled the amount of Family housing we have,” Reinert said. “And these are state-of-the-art homes. As you go through them, you will be impressed.
“This will serve the Fort McCoy community for generations to come and will really help our Families and help build a sense of community here,” Reinert said.
Following Reinert’s remarks, the official ribbon-cutting took place with members of installation leadership and members of an Army Family moving into the housing area doing the honors.
DPW Master Planner Brian Harrie said the new units are energy efficient — built with geothermal heat sources that provide all heating and air conditioning to the units. Additionally, domestic hot water is provided through high-efficiency, instantaneous tankless natural-gas water heaters.
The units also come with a two-car garage, three or four bedrooms, a full basement, and an in-home sprinkler system to protect against fire.
Fort McCoy has supported America’s armed forces since 1909. The installation’s motto is to be the “Total Force Training Center.” The post’s varied terrain, state-of-the-art ranges, new as well as renovated facilities, and extensive support infrastructure, combine to provide military personnel with an environment in which to develop and sustain the skills necessary for mission success.
