The wall was set up to give the people of Detroit a chance to see the memorial in their own city and in preparation for a Vietnam Veterans pinning ceremony, scheduled to take place later in the day.
“The Marines and I were extremely honored to put the memorial wall up this morning”, said Staff Sgt. Ana Villanueva, logistics manager for Marine Week. “They know how much this means to the veterans of the city of Detroit, and they know this is one way to payback Detroit for letting us in with open arms.”
The people of Detroit watched anxiously as Marines spent the morning cleaning Hart Plaza ensuring it looked perfect for the public and the wall.
“We’re so in awe and so humbled by this wall, I think seeing it and seeing all the names remind us of the sacrifices our Marines and military make for us,” she said.
The memorial will be on display for the public at Hart Plaza until Sunday.
Throughout the course of the week, the Marines will be conducting similar events to help Detroit citizens better understand the mission of the Marine Corps and to promote a greater relationship between Marines and the people of Detroit.
