MONTEREY, Calif. – The City Council of Monterey recognized an Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Monterey student for their selection at the city’s Joint Enlisted Board, Sept. 5.
Each military branch from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center selects an initial entry service member, a non-commissioned officer (NCO) student, and a staff member to compete at the city’s annual Joint Enlisted Board. Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) First Class Daniel Coley was selected as IWTC Monterey’s NCO student.
Competitors submit a biography and an essay and take part in a general military knowledge exam. Coley won the Student NCO award, and was able to have his wife and two daughters in attendance to see him give his speech to the city council in both English and the language he is studying before receiving his award.
"Receiving an award from the mayor and making a speech in front of the city council was nothing I have experienced before,” said Coley. “It was my first time representing the Navy in a public setting, and I feel it was a great experience for me at this point in my career."
IWTC Monterey, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of foreign language training to Navy personnel, which prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
