Sixty-six Montana Air National Guard personnel were activated to fight wildfires raging in the state of Montana.
The state activation is expected to last up to 15 days.
The Guardsmen reported to the 120th Airlift Wing at the Great Falls International Airport and received their initial training and safety briefings Wednesday, Sept. 13.
They were transported to Fort Harrison near Helena, Mont. to receive wildland firefighting training from members of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. They will learn fire suppression, detection and prevention skills.
Once trained in firefighting techniques, the Guardsmen are scheduled to be dispatched to fight fires burning in the state.
“We are proud Montanans and there is no hesitation when we are called to fight fires in our state,” said 120th AW Installation Deployment Officer Capt. Elizabeth Hewett. “No matter the scope of the emergency or situation, the 120th Airlift Wing will be there to execute the mission we are called upon to do.”
