118th Wing to support Hurricane Irma relief efforts on the ground and directly from Nashville

    NASHVILLE , TENNESSEE, UNITED STATES

    09.13.2017

Story by Master Sgt. Jeremy Cornelius and Tech. Sgt. Danielle Hopkins

118th Wing, Tennessee Air National Guard

The 118th Wing will provide a dual response to Hurricane Irma relief efforts. We will mobilize one chaplain from Nashville, Tennessee to the United States Virgin Islands in response to Hurricane Irma. Additionaly, our home station response from the 118th Wing at Berry Field Air National Guard Base in Nashville, Tennessee includes the 118th Intelligence, Surveillance, & Reconnaissance Group (ISRG).

Our Chaplain will provide immediate pastoral care and encouragement to the National Guardsmen performing relief efforts. Their primary role is to provide unit engagement during day to day operations, critical incident issues, pastoral counseling, religious services and deliver resiliency tools to help Guardsmen as they help bring stability back to the region in the midst of a natural disaster.

The 118th ISRG is currently providing Domestic Operations support using commercial satellite imagery and off the shelf technology from commercial open sources to help discover safe ingress and egress routes to flooded areas and determine the true extent of immediate damage to residential and commercial structures in Culebra Island, Puerto Rico as FEMA transitions to recovery operations in Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands. They also responded similarly to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts where they observed oil refineries and water treatment plants in Texas.

“The 118th Wing is always ready to provide support and service to our fellow Guardsmen and aid to those in need” said Col. Keith Allbritten, 118th Wing Commander. “Our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected by this hurricane. I am proud of our Airmen for their tireless efforts to respond on the ground in the affected areas and from right here in Nashville, Tennessee. This is what we train for. This is why America has a National Guard. To save lives at home, to fight our Nation’s wars and to build partnerships. We are here to help.”

For additional information on the 118th Wing’s response, contact the 118th Wing Public Affairs Office at 615-660-8062.
