Maj. Gen. Mark Palzer, commanding general, 79th Sustainment Support Command, was present to hand off the 451st from Brig. Gen. Bruce Hackett, the outgoing commanding general, 451st ESC to incoming commanding officer Brig. Gen. John Aarsen, 451st ESC.

“Expeditionary Sustainment Commands are the Army Reserve’s premier front-line providers of logistics that ensure units and warfighters around the globe have the combat support and combat service support they need to successfully accomplish their missions,” said Palzer.

Hackett had previously deployed with the 451st ESC from April 2016 to December 2016 to Camp Arifjan, Kuiwait in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Resolute Support, and Inherent Resolve.

While there, Hackett and the 451st ESC sustained over 9,600 Soldiers and 60 units with continuous sustainment support.

Palzer thanked Hackett for his hard work and dedication as the commander of the 451st ESC, and praised Aarsen, citing his extensive career.

“John (Aarsen) has served the Army at all levels since entering the Army,” said Palzer. “He enlisted in 1985 as a clerk-typist and then transitioned to a commissioned officer serving as an adjutant general and as a military historian.”

Aarsen has deployed to Bosnia and the Middle East in support of both Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

“I am honored that the board selected me to command the 451st, and in an Army coincidence to be back in Wichita where I began my Army Reserve history, and look forward to my next chapter here again,” said Aarsen.

Aarsen graduated from Wichita State University in 1989 and earned his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant through Army ROTC into the Adjutant General’s Corps. He then had several assignments here, to include the 89th Army Reserve Command, 387th Replacement Battalion, 403rd Adjutant General Company, and 101st Military History Detachment.
