SOUTHWEST ASIA – Coalition partners and US Soldiers celebrate Women’s Equality Day at Camp Redleg, Aug. 26, 2017. The event was coordinated by Staff Sgt. Daysi Fields, 5-3 Field Artillery Regiment.
“This was a great opportunity to recognize the women who have come before us and celebrate our recent successes,” said Fields.
Capt. Shannon McDonnell, Bravo Battery commander, 5-3 FAR, read the Presidential Proclamation, “On August 26, 1920, America ratified the 19th Amendment, securing for women a sacred right of citizenship: the right to vote. On the anniversary of that historic day, we celebrate Women's Equality Day and the innumerable contributions women have made to their families, their communities, and in service to our country.”
“During my 29 years of service, I have seen the Army make tremendous progress in terms of diversity and equality. We live in an era of historic commitment, sacrifice, and achievement to all Soldiers,” stated 1st Sgt. Deborah Manzanares, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 169th Field Artillery Brigade.
“I appreciated the Women's Equality Day event. It was the first time I attended one, which is a shame,” said 169th Chaplain, Maj. Mary St. Onge, “I enjoy my rights and freedoms too casually, forgetting those who won those rights for me. Today I look back and feel grateful. If I didn't, I would miss how far we've come and take my blessings for granted.”
Coalition Partners from Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands attended the program and enjoyed hearing about the history of the women’s suffrage movement and celebrated in the honoring of America's female military pioneers.
