NYMINDEGAB, Denmark – Any soldier in an infantry unit can tell you that practicing and improving shooting skills with your weapon are some of the most important parts of the job. For the members of Michigan Army National Guard Company B, 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment (B/1-125 IN) based out of Saginaw, Michigan, who are currently training at Exercise Viking Star 2017 in Denmark, practice makes perfect in more ways than one.
Along with their typical zeroing or centering of weapon system sights, and qualifying with moving targets in a timed setting, B/1-125 IN also took part in the Danish Home Guard qualification tests as well.
“We’ll start by zeroing the sights on the National Guard soldiers’ weapons,” said Danish Home Guard 1st Lt. Karsten Falck. “After that, they’ll move on to our Danish shooting ranges where they will get a chance to do the two rifle qualification tests we have in the Home Guard.” Falck serves as a liaison between the American visitors and their Danish hosts during the two-week Viking Star 2017 training.
B/1-125 will not only hone their own skills with regular weapons qualification, but will also qualify for shooting proficiency badges awarded by the Home Guard. The awards range from bronze to silver and gold and add an extra accolade to their training in Denmark. While the qualification was taking place, 1st Lt. Falck had good things to say about the Michigan National Guard and how closely the two militaries have trained recently.
“It’s exciting to have the Michigan National Guard training here alongside the Danish Home Guard,” said Falck, “I was company commander of the Home Guard when we were at Operation Northern Strike 2017 in Grayling, Michigan, so it’s nice to be able to repay the favor here in Denmark and take them through some of our training as well.”
