JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – Navy Region Northwest (NRNW) passed the Seattle Seahawks “12th Man” flag to 1st Special Forces Group during the 6th annual USAA change of command ceremony at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), Sept. 19.
NRNW handed the 12th Man flag over to 1st Special Forces Group, who will become the sixth military unit to hold the flag, during a ceremony attended by 10 Seahawks players, the Sea Gals, Blitz (the Seahawks mascot), team representatives and service members from the Navy and Army.
“It was a great honor and privilege for the Navy to be responsible for the 12th Man flag,” said Rear Adm. Gary Mayes, commander NRNW. “We’ve had the flag under the sea, on the sea and over the sea, and it was a great pleasure.”
The day included a FitLight speed light test for the service members to participate in, static displays of Army combat vehicles and helicopters, and autograph sessions that allowed service members to meet the Seahawks players and Sea Gals.
“It was an honor [getting to meet the service members],” said Seahawks rookie defensive back Shaq Griffin. “It was a pleasure to meet them, because without them I wouldn’t be able to play this game that I love, and I felt like I wanted an autograph from them!”
This marks the sixth year that the Seahawks have chosen a local Pacific Northwest military unit to carry their 12th Man flag.
“The appreciation that [the Seahawks organization] has for what [the military] does is really important for our guys,” said Mike Flood, the Seahawks vice president of community outreach. “We hope that we can engender the same commitment to our team as what you guys have.”
During the main event, a ceremony resembling a classic military change-of-command, Rear Adm. Mayes turned over the 12th Man flag to Army Col. Guillaume N. Beaurpere, 1st Special Forces Group commanding officer.
“I want to thank you personally for this outreach to the military, it means a lot to me,” said Beaurpere. “It truly is an honor to represent you and be your 12th Man this season, we will honor you and carry your 12th Man flag, and we are very proud of that privilege.
