Marines with 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance, 2nd Marine Division, conducted a deployment for training exercise at Fort Pickett, Virginia, Sept. 13 -21.

The DFT is a training exercise designed to force the Marines to accustom themselves to a new area while completing a variety of missions that prepare them for possible scenarios they may face while overseas.

“The goal here is to put Marines in a different environment and conduct live-fire training during the day and at night,” said Staff Sgt. Dustin Kneut, the battalion assistance operations chief with 2nd LAR. “We also had combat operations center missions and we were trying to see how effective all of the aspects of the battalion are at completing the mission.”

Using the ranges of Fort Pickett, which provided more than what was accessible in Camp Lejeune, the Marines and Sailors of 2nd LAR conducted the DFT in order to improve the skills needed to fight efficiently on the battlefield.

“This [training] is something we work very hard on,” said Lt. Col. Mark Liston, the commanding officer of 2nd LAR. “The Marines and Sailors go through great aspects so that all of our tactics, techniques and procedures are refined. We make sure we are best postured for any contingency operations available.”

The Marines faced a rocky start after being delayed by a day because of Hurricane Irma. Despite these obstacles, the Marines adapted to the situation and continued to train.

“We asked a lot out of the Marines, and we began with a long road march over 200 miles with 94 vehicles involved and rolled right into armored reconnaissance and security operations,” said Liston.
The training strengthened the capabilities of 2nd LAR and allowed them to assess different situations, plan accordingly and sharpen their proficiency.

“The purpose of this [DFT] is to continue to enhance our skills and that takes a lot of continual refinement and practice, “said Liston. “It’s a natural skill we need to do in every environment and every climate at any time of the year.”

2nd LAR is slated for another DFT in a desert environment during the winter where they will compete alongside their U.S. Army counterparts.
