Earlier in September, the Reno Air Racing Association held “Military Appreciation Day” the Reno Air Races. The Nevada Air National Guard’s 152nd Airlift Wing (the High Rollers) participated in several events during that day. In addition to the support that the Nevada Air National Guard provides each year: a static aircraft display, a recruiting tent, an air drop demonstration and fire truck support; they helped with the unfurling of a large American Flag and the presentation of the colors.
The opening ceremony on Saturday included a memorable unfurling of the U. S. flag measuring seventy-five feet by one hundred feet—which was quite cumbersome with the strong winds. 152nd Security Forces Squadron member, Airman First Class Alexandria Crank said, “Holding the flag for the first time was really amazing because every day I risk my life to make sure that flag doesn’t hit the ground and being there and being able to hold it and make sure it doesn’t hit the ground was one of the best experiences of my life.”
152nd Communications Flight member, Airman First Class Logan Lathrop added, “It felt very prideful to be out there holding the giant flag.”
In addition to all of the High Rollers present and providing support, the commander of the Nevada Army National Guard, Brig. Gen. Zachary Doser, was also there and said, “It was a great honor and it was very humbling to be out there, when it started out, the National Anthem being sung, you know I almost started crying because I am so proud of this country and I am proud to be in the military.”
The Nevada Air National Guard Color Guard team consisted of Tech. Sgt. Javier Contreras, Staff Sgt. Kylea Sherman, Airman Tyler Bickell and Airman Basic Nathan Narra.
High Rollers helping with the flag were Master Sgts. Ian O’Grady, Martin Rodriguez, Airmen 1st Class Alexandria Crank, Logan Lathrop and Airman Basic Jeffrey Sawyer. The 152nd Civil Engineer Squadron provided four fire and emergency vehicles and there was over 50 personnel for all other support to include maintenance, vehicle operations, recruiting and flying crews.
Other High Rollers supporting the event were: the entire Nevada Air National Guard recruiting team; Lt. Cols. Ricardo Bravo and Hillary Moynihan, Majs. David McNally, Joe Jaquish, Mike Murray, Tony Silva, Capts. Daniel Shure, Kyle Zust, Klank Kuhlman, Alex Rodriguez, 1st Lts. Jamie Long, Joshua Rogers, Megan Curry, Nicole McCray, Senior Master Sgts.
