As the desert sun beat down through the windows of the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center in Fort Bliss, a student’s smile lights up an auditorium packed with anticipation. A culmination of countless hours of hard work and dedication were realized as the Partners in Education program celebrated their contributions and achievements with students around the El Paso education community, September 20.
“Today we’re celebrating our 17th Annual Partners in Education Kickoff,” said Patricia Lopez, the School Liaison Officer with the Partners in Education program partnered with Fort Bliss. “We’ve been here as Partners in Education for many years.”
For over 30 years, the Partners in Education program has worked with the Fort Bliss community to ensure that education is promoted and celebrated within the military and for their families.
“It’s about establishing a positive relationship and a partnership with your military family and your community,” said Lopez. “As a program and as an organization, it grows, every year it grows.”
The program benefits both the Soldiers on Fort Bliss as well as the students from various schools.
“We’re going to try to do some work with tutoring, and maybe do some field day events,” said Capt. Alexander Stalnaker, the Rear Detachment Commander with the 4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment. “Maybe an EST (Engagement Skills Trainer) event where some of the middle school kids can come and do some shooting on the computer. I’m really excited about a partnership with them.”
The collaboration with the Partners in Education provides unique and enriching opportunities for soldiers.
“We have a pretty robust rear detachment,” said Stalnaker. “We’re really excited to give our soldiers some opportunities to go help out the local community.”
The cooperation between the Partnership in Education and the Fort Bliss community has aided soldiers and their families as well as the students who have actively sought education opportunities.
During a deployment, when our unit is away from their family and children, continued contact with the students can really bring up morale, said Stalnaker in describing the bonds that are built through with the Partners in Education. “It’s something that the kids can really look forward to.”
