Two members of the U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) Manpower and Personnel Directorate (J1) were recognized for their accomplishments during an award ceremony, Sept. 28, 2017, at USSTRATCOM, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.
Maj. Heather Mahowald, individual mobilization augmentee to the chief of joint force development, earned the Air Force Personnel Field Grade Officer of the Year award for 2016. Peggy J. Corpman, human resources assistant, earned the Air Force A1 Technician of the Year award for 2016.
“The J1 in any command is full of unsung heroes. It’s not often that the commander gets to take a moment to celebrate a huge success,” said U.S. Marine Corps Col. Carolyn Bird, director of manpower and personnel. “These two people represent all the great work that you’re doing.”
U.S. Air Force Gen. John Hyten, commander of USSTRATCOM, presented the awards and highlighted the impact Mahowald and Corpman have on the command.
“To have two Air Force award winners in a small group in our headquarters is a wonderful thing,” Hyten said. “Thank you for making sure the personnel side runs correctly—you do that well.”
Hyten continued his remarks by recognizing the individual award winners.
‘She’s an Air Force major, but she took the time to write a FITREP [fitness report] guide for the U.S. Navy here at STRATCOM, officer and enlisted, and an evaluation guide for the U.S. Army here at STRATCOM. That’s never been done before,” said Hyten of Mahowald’s accomplishments. “She’s providing guidance for the other services, while doing all the stuff she has to, she still goes above and beyond.”
Hyten also talked about Corpman’s accomplishments.
“I bet you I’ve put my signature on a document that Peggy has prepared more than any other individual in this command … and they’re always right,” Hyten said. “She does an amazing job and it’s really cool that the Air Force recognizes her as Technician of the Year across the Air Force personnel system.”
One of nine Department of Defense unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global missions assigned through the Unified Command Plan that include strategic deterrence, space operations, cyberspace operations, joint electronic warfare, global strike, missile defense and intelligence.
