Several Airmen from Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, have plans to run in the upcoming Air Force Marathon Sept. 16, starting at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
Airman 1st Class Crayton Noe, a fuels apprentice with the 55th Logistics Readiness Squadron, is preparing to run the Air Force Marathon for the first time.
“My weekly miles range anywhere from 50 to 85 miles a week, so I’ve definitely ran a marathon before, but just not in a competition,” he said. “In 2015, when I first came here, I was named the fastest man on Offutt – I ran my mile and a half in eight minutes and thirty-two seconds,” he said. “The fastest I’ve ever ran it was seven minutes and forty seconds, but that’s without push-ups and sit-ups. There have been other runners who have run their mile and a half faster than me, so I’m not always the fastest, but I’m up there.”
Noe said many marathon runners approach marathons with carefully targeted and measured times they want to hit for each mile in order to reach their goals. However, he’s taking a different approach.
“My side is, I’m just going to go out and run it,” Noe said. I’ve been training for it and I know I can do it, so I’m going more from a perspective of that confidence is already there. I’m hoping that that’s going to push me to the point I want to get to, and that’s the mentality I have with my run clinic as well. Working with more confidence and what you already have, rather than trying to push you to a point that you’re not ready for yet.”
Noe is the creator of the Offutt Run Clinic, which meets four times a week and promises to cut 1.5 mile run times by at least 30 seconds. Those who have attended the clinic have been impressed with his drive and dedication to training.
"He's clearly a really talented runner," said Tech. Sgt. Rachelle Blake, who has attended Noe's clinic a few times. "I'm not at all surprised he's going to run the marathon. I think he'll do great!"
Despite not holding himself as strictly to time goals as other marathoners often do, Noe does have three goals he hopes to reach during the Air Force Marathon.
“My first goal is to run a sub-three hour marathon, my second goal is to place in my age group and my third goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon.”
