Leaders from across Okinawa gathered for the 4th Annual Okinawa Leadership Social Sept. 29 at Tengan Castle aboard Camp Courtney.
Leaders from the Okinawa community, Japan Self-Defense Force and U.S. military shared an assortment of food, deserts, and drinks while they conversed, shared laughs and strengthened alliances and friendships.
“I know that our ability to get together for an event like this doesn’t happen too often, so I hope you all take the great opportunity to do so,” said Lt. Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson, the commanding general of III Marine Expeditionary Force, during his opening comments. “Tonight is an attempt by us, to reciprocate the hospitality that you, the people of Okinawa, have shown all of us here, who represent the United States.”
Attendees initiated conversation with handshakes and wide smiles as they visited with old friends and made new ones. Leaders embraced this opportunity to enhance relationships between the military and local communities on Okinawa.
“Your presence here highlights the strength of the relationships that we have,” said Brig. Gen. Paul Rock Jr., the commanding general of Marine Corps Installations Pacific-Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Japan, during his closing remarks. “Everything starts locally, and just walking through the room and meeting everyone, I’ve seen evidence of so many strong relationships between the U.S. and local leaders. To everyone who has come as a guest tonight, I’d like to say, you honor us with your friendship, and your support. You are what makes our tour here so memorable.”
