FORT GORDON, Ga. (NNS) – Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Steven S. Giordano and his wife, Elka Giordano, Navy Ombudsman-at-Large, met with Sailors and toured commands on Fort Gordon including Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Georgia Sept. 22-23.
During the trip, Giordano hosted an all-hands call, held a Sailor of the Quarter (SOQ) and Sailor of the Year (SOY) luncheon, and met with on-duty watch standers.
Giordano was previously assigned to NIOC Georgia in 2004 as a sub-surface direct support deployer. He again visited NIOC Georgia in 2012 as the Force Master Chief of Navy Information Forces. The latest visit was Giordano’s first since becoming MCPON in September 2016.
During the all-hands call, the Sailors of the NIOC Georgia Junior Sailor Association presented Giordano with a commemorative plaque which will adorn the NIOC Georgia Navy barracks. The plaque commemorated Giordano’s achievement of being the first MCPON selected from the cryptologic community. As he accepted the gift, he emphasized a quote inscribed on the plaque, which reads: “Your legacy should not be defined by what you accomplish, but by what those Sailors who came behind you accomplished.”
After the presentation of the plaque, Giordano fielded questions from Sailors on various topics including upcoming changes to the Navy Performance Evaluation and Advancement systems, uniform matters, current events, and warfare qualifications.
Afterward, he hosted a luncheon with SOQ and SOY awardees assigned to NIOC Georgia, the Center for Information Warfare Training Detachment, and local reserve units. During the luncheon, Giordano held candid conversations in order to understand the perspective of Sailors currently serving in the cryptologic and Information Warfare communities.
“As Sailors, you need to embrace change and welcome new challenges,” said Giordano. “These fields are continually evolving – by maintaining your technical knowledge you will prepared for those changes.”
After the luncheon, Giordano toured NIOC Georgia spaces and interacted with watch personnel. During this time he received briefings from signals analysts, sub-surface deployers, and Sailors on the battle watch.
“Interacting with Sailors in their operational environment is essential to improving their war fighting effectiveness and quality of life,” said Giordano, who is a previously rated Cryptologic Technician (Technical).
Giordano is the Navy’s 14th MCPON, and is a key advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations and Chief of Naval Personnel in matters concerning enlisted personnel and their families.
U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy’s Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an Echelon II command.
U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides operational direction through its Maritime Operations Center located at Fort George Meade Md., executing command and control over assigned forces in support of Navy or joint missions in cyber/networks, information operations, electronic warfare, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
