In 2016, there were 1,342,000 fires reported in the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Association, these fires caused 3,390 civilian deaths, 14,650 civilian injuries and $10.6 billion in property damage.
Since 1956, the 7th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department has participated in Fire Prevention Week to teach families about the importance of fire safety.
This year, the Dyess Fire Department hosted several activities to help educate Airmen and their families on fire readiness in a fun and effective way.
“Events included a fire parade in base housing, Dyess Child Development Center and Youth Center static displays, a smoke house for evacuation procedures, a firefighter challenge and a dinner for deployed spouses,” said Staff Sgt. Jared Weeks, 7th CES lead firefighter.
Each event that was held during the week had a sole purpose in preparing participants for fires.
“Public education is our main priority as well as our best opportunity to connect with our local community,” said Weeks. “Each activity was carefully planned to focus on specific safety tips and guided learning for Airmen and their families.”
Those that participated in Fire Prevention Week learned numerous fire safety tips including; crawling low to the ground in a building fire, feeling the temperature of a door before entering a room and finding the safest exit in a building.
In a fire disaster, being ready and getting out of a building as soon as possible is vital.
According to the NFPA, seconds can mean the difference between residents of our community escaping safely from a fire or having their lives end in tragedy.
Weeks wants others “I would like people to remember that every second counts during a fire and there are always two ways out!” said Weeks.
Weeks wants to convey a strong message of safety during this week.
“I hope by the end of this week folks understand the importance of knowing how to not only prevent fires, but how to react safely in case of a fire.”
