2017 Fleet Week San Diego Concludes

    SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES

    10.17.2017

Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Nathan Serpico

    Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet

SAN DIEGO (NNS) – After a week of sea service members interacting with the local community through ship tours, exhibits, demonstrations, and community outreach projects, Fleet Week San Diego ended, Oct 17.

Throughout the week-long event gave scores of people insight on life as a Sailor, Marine, or Coast Guard member through tours of San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock USS Anchorage (LPD 23) and Coast Guard Cutter Midgett (WHEC 726). The guests also had the opportunity to learn about each ship’s capabilities and role in the Navy’s mission.

As part of Fleet Week, the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG53,) Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance (DDG 111) and several Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard aircraft participated in the Parade of Ships. The service members participated in several outreach projects. They helped build playhouses with Habitat for Humanity and assisted to clear debris and plant new trees for an outdoor Earthlab facility.

Static displays and demonstrations were set up for citizens to witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. Visitors were provided the opportunity to try everything from donning a helmet and protective vest to sitting in the driver’s seat of vehicles used in combat.

"Bringing the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard to the community is the key goal for all Fleet Weeks,” said Lt. Cmdr. Clarence Harris, assigned to Commander, U.S. Third Fleet. “The citizens of San Diego have been gracious hosts, allowing us the opportunity to showcase what the Navy has to offer.”

U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. Third Fleet works constantly with U.S. 7th Fleet. The forces of both fleets complement one another across the spectrum of military operations in the Pacific.
