JOINT SECURITY STATION JENKINS, Iraq - With less than two months on ground, the third phase of United States Navy Seabees from Amphibious Construction Battalion 2, Detachment India were called upon to construct a joint security station for the U.S. Army's 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment and Iraqi army in the Dhi Qar province of Iraq. The small band of 21 Seabees made the three-hour convoy, hit the ground running and made immediate impacts at the JSS site.
Immediate improvements included constructing shower facilities to replace the bucket showers previously in use. This small improvement was met with great rejoice from the Army Soldiers.
ACB-2 member, boatswain's mate Petty Officer 1st Class Carlton Melton of Hartford, Mich., stated, "The ability to take a hot shower will never be taken for granted again."
Additional improvements included emplacing 700 feet of HESCO Barriers around the perimeter, constructing a 4,000-square foot motor pool, a 7.62 mm outdoor shooting range, building berthing spaces and 440 kilowatt of electrical infrastructure improvements.
"After three weeks of improving the quality of life for these Soldiers, all the gratitude, and appreciation they've expressed gave us a sense of pride and satisfaction," said builder Petty Officer 2nd Class David Eddy of Methuen, Mass.
The JSS is posthumously named for fallen Army Soldier Staff Sgt. Kenneth A. Jenkins, who was 2-12 CAV's only combat casualty in 2006. JSS Jenkins is strategically located to stabilize the security situation in this area of responsibility, while at the same time providing a partnership between coalition forces and the Iraqi army.
"On a project like this with limited resources and a tight timeline, it takes a great deal of ingenuity and hard work to accomplish the mission. Here at JSS Jenkins everyone has shown a great deal of both," said the Alpha Company, 2-12 CAV executive officer and Davenport, Iowa, native, 1st Lt. Seth J. Coussens.
To cap off the project, the 2-12 CAV leadership offered the Seabees a place of honor to hang their unit logo on the outside of their building. With the cooperation and support from the 2-12 CAV and the "can do" spirit of the Seabees, the JSS Jenkins build was a complete success.
