CAMP STRIKER, Iraq – Patrol Base Warrior's Keep was transitioned to the Iraqi Army during a ceremony Oct. 15, 2008.
The 2nd Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Brigade, 17th Iraqi Army Division took the reigns from Company D, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
"Many things have been achieved throughout Sadr Al Yusifiyah over the past year," said Capt. Salah Khalaf Farhan, 2/2/23/17th IA commander. "The most important thing is that the people in the area are now living without fear."
"Warrior's Keep was necessary due to its central location in the Sadr Al Yusifiyah area," said 1st Lt. Ricky McGuire, native of St. Louis, Co. D., 1-187th Inf. Regt., fire support officer. "The patrol base served as a perfect position to posture multiple offensive operations in order to defeat what was once a relentless enemy."
PB Warrior Keep is the ninth patrol base to transition from Rakkasan control to that of the IA.
"Peace and security in this area have been our main goals and the local population has done an outstanding job helping to facilitate," said Capt. Matthew Davis, from Columbia, S.C., Co. D., 1-187th Inf. Regt., commander. "For a long time Sadr Al Yusifiyah experienced great strife and obstacles caused by a once relentless enemy yet, through security and peace, the area was reclaimed."
There are seven remaining patrol bases in the Rakkasan area of operations scheduled to be transitioned to the IA.
"The IA will continue to be successful in the area and be a springboard for all positive things to come," Davis said.
"We promise to dedicate ourselves to this area and to be loyal to what is now a new Iraq," Farhan said.
The patrol base was established in March 2006 by Co. C, 2nd BCT, 502nd Inf. Regt., 101st Abn. Div. (AASLT).
