The Men’s Air Force team came out on top against Army in the 2017 Armed Forces Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship at Chapparell Fitness Center Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland AFB, Texas.
Air Force Capt. Michael Lyons, assigned to Peterson AFB, Colo., hit 30 points during the close match, taking them to the final score of 88-85.
Last year, Army won the 2016 Men’s Armed Forces Basketball Championship, breaking Air Force’s championship win streak that endured for eight-straight years.
Although Air Force Airman 1st Class Apiphany Woods, assigned to Moody AFB, was the top scorer during the Women’s match, with 22 points, Army took the win 72-63. Army Spc. Juliette Turner, assigned to the Texas Army National Guard, earned her team 20 points.
Men’s Marine Corps won a hard fought victory over Navy with a score of 92-76. Marine Corps Sergeant Montonio Kenan scored 22 points and Navy Lt. Mark Veazey scored 19.
Women’s Navy defeated Marine Corps 83-31. U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Shynisha Johnson scored 17 points. Marine Corps Sgt. Naomi Greene scored 11 points.
At the end of day-one, Army and Navy women remain unbeaten, with Air Force men remaining at the top winning both their games.
Day-three of competition on 3 November will conclude the first round of tournament play.
The 2017 Armed Forces Championship format consists of double round robin play, where each teams faces one another twice for seeding. The top two best records will face one another in the championship match to claim the 2017 Armed Forces crown.
