Airmen from the 315th Airlift Wing conducted an Ability to Survive and Operate in a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, enhanced conventional weapons environment Sunday morning during their Unit Training Assembly here.
The wing has executed two ATSO/CBRNE training events this year and one in 2016, which account for training 400 deployable Airmen. These training exercises are intended to evaluate how the wing is prepared for readiness.
Lt. Colonel Bobby Degregorio, Force Management Branch chief at Air Force Reserve Command, Warner Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, was invited to the morning training event to observe the operations and provide feedback to the team.
“It’s impressive to see how the team has evolved in order to make this work,” said Degregorio. “This training is taken very seriously due to the real-world situations that are out there, and I am glad to see this training being conducted today.”
The exercise required Airmen to demonstrate the ability to don and doff their Mission Oriented Protective Posture gear during several key scenarios that were played out during the morning training event.
“Donning of their gear is very important,” said Degregorio. “We have our Wing Inspection Team here to make sure that everything the Airmen are doing is done properly during the exercise.”
In addition to MOPP gear training, Airmen were required to defend entry control points, identify unexploded ordinance, and protect a static C-17 Globemaster aircraft.
Readiness has come back to the forefront and the training conducted Sunday morning is an integral piece of the puzzle so that Citizen Airmen are prepared to support and augment their active duty counterparts.
“We are trying to see where we are in terms of readiness as a whole,” said Master Sgt. Brian Henderson, flight plans section chief for the 315Th Logistics Readiness Squadron. “We have already exercised a good portion of our wing with recent deployments and this will show us where we need to go in terms of additional training and preparation. We are focused on these Airmen performing their jobs in an ATSO/CBRNE environment and being able to respond to a mission that they are requested to fulfill using their skillset.”
More than 90 Airmen took part in this morning’s training, which involved the 38th and 81st Aerial Port Squadrons, 315th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, 315th Security Forces Squadron, 315th Logistics Readiness Squadron, 315th Contingency Response Flight, and the 560th RED HORSE Squadron. Additional support was provided by Active Duty team members from Joint Base Charleston.
