It is an epidemic that just won’t seem to go away. Homelessness.

Yet the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center continues to work for a solution. The medical center hosted a Stand Down for Homelessness, Friday, Nov. 3 at Transitions in Columbia, S.C.

Veterans and non-Veterans alike were able to find and get information, assistance, clothing, medical checks, hot meals, and flu-shots during the day-long session at the local homeless shelter.

Chief Executive Officer of Transitions, Craig Curry, stated that this annual event is targeted to reach the Veterans. “Last year, we were able to help about 120 Veterans. The thing is that they have to want the help,” Curry said.

Having served in various branches of the military, in peace time, conflict, and actual wars, Veterans whether homeless or not, seem to hold onto one emotion…pride. And that pride may stand in the way of them getting service and care.

“But our goal is to get to zero homelessness among our Veterans,” David Omura, director of the Dorn VAMC, stressed to all those present in the opening program. “It’s a national priority, and the VA is committed to this cause. Dorn VA Medical Center is proud to be a part of the solution by providing resources for jobs, medical, emotional, financial, and other services for Veterans.”

Giveaways included much needed toiletry items, in addition to sweat pants, boots, backpacks, jackets, blankets, socks and more.

Chief of Staff for Dorn VA Medical Center and Army Veteran, Bernard DeKoning, agreed that a Stand Down is the right thing to do. “This is an opportunity to reach out to the community and offer help in as many ways as possible to the Veterans of the area,” DeKoning said.

Throughout the month of November, Veterans and military family members will be recognized for their continued contributions to the services.
