SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – A soldier from East Lake North, Ohio is deployed to Puerto Rico supporting the Puerto Rican government’s recovery efforts following Hurricane Maria. Army Spc. Anthony Daykin, a graduate of East Lake North High School, is a truck driver assigned to the 1483rd Transportation Battalion of the Ohio Army National Guard.
Hurricane Maria was a Category 5 hurricane. It struck the island of Puerto Rico, an American territory, on September 20, 2017.
This is Daykin’s first deployment with the Army.
“The best part of serving in Puerto Rico is spending time with the locals and seeing the relief of the families,” he said.
Daykin is stationed at the military station at Roosevelt Roads in the municipality of Ceiba, but performs missions across the island and beyond. His most recent mission actually brought him off the main island of Puerto Rico to the smaller island of Vieques.
Vieques is an island east of Puerto Rico inhabited by approximately 14,000 people. On November 4, 2017 Daykin and his unit filled two military cargo trucks with food and water. They then drove the trucks onto an Army (yes – Army) mechanized landing craft vessel, which then transported them across the water to Vieques. Once at Vieques, Daykin and his unit drove the food and water to a town where they distributed it to the Puerto Rican people in need.
The work in Puerto Rico is creating strong bonds between Daykin, the soldiers of his units, and the civilian emergency response personnel with whom his unit is partnered, but it also creates longing for the comforts of home. Daykin says what he misses most is spending time with his family and friends in Ohio.
US military forces, including the active component, National Guard and reserve, are deployed across Puerto Rico to support the Puerto Rican government and the Federal Emergency Management Agency in recovering from the effects of multiple powerful storms that struck the island in the summer of 2017.
