    420th Engineer Brigade

Kandahar Air Base, Afghanistan – The 215th Vertical Engineer Company and the 207th Horizontal Engineer Company completed construction of explosive ordnance disposal training lanes at Kandahar Air Base, Afghanistan, Nov. 1.

The EOD lanes will support the training of troops who are in the region in support Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

The construction project was commissioned by the 704th Ordinance Company and Kandahar Air Base Area Support Group, and will result in a re-location of the existing training site. The intent is to have a facility to familiarize incoming units with the unique improvised explosive device threats associated with the KAF ground defense area. The facility will use a combination of indoor classroom presentation and outdoor scenario-based hands on training.

Successful completion of the project required the incorporation of both horizontal and vertical engineering assets.
Horizontal engineering efforts included burying a concrete culvert and emplacing a surface culvert. Additionally, horizontal engineers constructed an S-shaped road to create an additional challenge for units training on the lanes, one they are likely to encounter in real-world scenarios.

The vertical efforts include the construction of a two-level re-locatable building with stairs and railings and conditions that simulate actual Afghan buildings. All safety precautions are being implemented in the vertical construction of these RLBs with as much consideration to realistic environments as can be made without hazards to the Soldiers engaged in the training.

Sgt. Maj. Eduardo Amesquita, 420th Theater Engineer Brigade safety officer, visited the site Aug. 9. Amesquita said he observed cohesion and a unity of effort between the two construction companies of the 854th Engineer Battalion.

“They are working with limited resources but find creative solutions to complete the mission,” said Amesquita. “Both the 207th Engineer Company (horizontal) and the 215th Engineer Company (vertical) take pride in their work and are dedicated to the delivering the customer a quality product.”

The project leadership on site briefed Amesquita on the scope of work and the projected time line for completion. He performed a walkthrough of the site to determine if the safety measures that the units have implemented are effective and also gave additional recommendation on accident prevention.

Overall, Amesquita said he was very impressed with the safety culture that the 854th Engineer Battalion leadership displayed in the EOD lanes construction project.

“The leadership clearly defined and communicate safety control measures on identified hazards,” said Amesquita. “The emphasis on safety resulted in a collective commitment from the project non-commissioned officer and enlisted personnel.”
