“We’re swapping banks,” said Personnel Specialist 2nd Class James McClain. “You will still be able to continue to use the cash card that you have now, however after Aug. 18, if you lose your card, we will be unable to issue you a new card until Aug. 21.”

Although the change may seem abrupt, it is a matter of timing.

“Just with anything, it comes down to contracts,” said Ensign Andrew Brian Oxendine, Ford’s disbursing and postal officer. “JPMorgan Chase’s contract was over, so PNC took over the contract to issue the Navy Cash cards.”

Additionally, new check-ins will still be able to receive a cash card during this transition period.

“Between Aug. 18 and 21, anyone who checks in will be able to get a temporary visitor card, which will not be attached to your bank account,” said McClain. “So these people need to bring in cash to put funds on their card.”

Nothing is projected to change while Ford is currently underway.

“There is a period between Aug. 20 at 2200 through Aug. 21 at 0600 that no one will be able to use the strip on their card,” said McClain. “That is a blackout period for the transition between the banks.”

To avoid a lack of funds before the blackout, be sure to plus up your current Navy Cash card at kiosks prior to Aug. 17 at 2000.

“The new cards will look different than the former cards, with no change in functionality,” said McClain. “You can continue to use your current card until you receive your new embossed card with your name on it in January.”

Don’t worry about having to fill out additional forms. McClain says the process is just like receiving a new debit card in the mail.

“When your old card is cancelled, all of your remaining balance on that card is reverted back to the card’s strip balance, which automatically carries over to your new card,” says McClain. “All of your bank account information will automatically be transferred over to the new card.”

Additionally, after the official transition is complete, you can continue to use your former Navy Cash card until it expires, or until Dec. 31, 2018.

“You are not able to have two active cards,” says McClain. “For instance, if you have an active card now and we try to issue you a new one, it will say that you have an active card in possession. That means we would have to cancel the active card in order to issue you a new one.”

If you need more information about the change in the Navy Cash Program, head over to the disbursing office.

“You can come down to the disbursing office if you have questions,” said Oxendine. “All of the Sailors down here are very knowledgeable about the change and can answer your questions.”
