Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Fire and Emergency Services hosted a fire safety event at Charles F. Bolden elementary school on Laurel Bay, October 12, 2017.
The event was held to help educate the students about fire safety tips as well as fire prevention techniques. Students learned different techniques ranging from when to change the batteries in a home’s smoke detector to finding appropriate evacuation routes in case of a house fire.
“We love coming out to the schools and teaching the kids about safety,” said Joseph Otterbine, the lead fire inspector for MCAS Beaufort and Laurel Bay. “We want to make sure these kids get the proper knowledge to protect themselves and their loved ones.”
MCAS Beaufort Fire firefighters showed the kids the importance of fire safety and how they can help prevent accidents from happening in the first place. MCAS Beaufort gave the kids a look at a fire truck and the different equipment they use while fighting fires as well as a tour of a brand new interactive inflatable house that shows the importance of fire safety and preparedness.
“Having these resources like these available for the kids is really important,” said Fire Inspector Scott Craft. “Kids learn much better when they have something in front of them that they can see and touch.”
Fire safety is especially important during this time of the year because in 1922 President Calvin Coolidge established this week as National Fire Prevention Week. Each year the week has a different theme, with this year’s being “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways out!” which stresses the importance of having more than one exit in case of a fire.
“We have such a great relationship with our firefighters on base,” said Angela Stephens, the principal of Charles F. Bolden Elementary School. “They always do an exceptional job with our kids to make sure they understand the importance of fire safety here and at their home.”
Contrary to popular belief, a firefighter’s only isn’t to just fight fires. MCAS Beaufort fire inspectors try to educate the kids on the importance of fire prevention to make sure they don’t happen in the first place.
“It’s hard for people to believe that we don’t want to fight fires,” said Otterbine. “If we can educate these kids on the importance of fire prevention so that they can ultimately save a life, that’s all matters.”
