When Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) determined that a Navy Medicine command could nominate a Sailor of the Year in four categories this year, Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) readily accepted the opportunity to do exactly that.
“Giving us the ability to recognize another of our deserving Sailors was very appropriate,” said NHB Command Master Chief James Reynolds, explaining that adding an additional category for junior Sailors allowed top-notch petty officer third classes to compete against each other and not go head-to-head with those of a higher paygrade with more time and experience.
“It makes sense. We have highly competitive groups in every category – Senior Sailor, Sailor, Junior Sailor and Blue Jacket. It was hard to pick in each grouping but each Sailor selected is a great representative for our command,” Reynolds said.
NHB Senior Sailor of the Year is Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Nicholas Geisinger of Director of Surgical Services; Sailor of the Year is Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Shasta Campbell from the Command Career Counselor office; Junior Sailor of the Year is Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Aaron Cross of Director of Medical Services and Blue Jacket of the Year is Hospitalman Daisy Fuentes from Director of Clinical Support Services.
Geisinger, from Allentown, Pennsylvania, was selected based being a leading petty officer and subject matter expert in Director of Surgical Services, his command and community involvement, off-duty education pursuing a degree in health care administration, numerous personal awards received during the nomination year, including nine letters of appreciation and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service medal, and being active in multiple collateral duties benefiting the command.
Reynolds will accompany Geisinger to Navy Medicine (NAVMED) West in San Diego to compete with other Senior Sailor of the Year candidates. NAVMED West is made up of 10 military treatment facilities, two dental battalions and 51 branch health clinics located in California, Washington, Hawai’i, Guam, Korea, Japan and Diego Garcia.
“We will also take the nomination packages for our other Sailors to have them judged against their peers from other commands,” shared Reynolds.
Senior Sailor of the Year nominees in the final running were HM1 Maria Desouza from Director Medical Services, HM1 Anthony Vanluven of Director of Administration, and HM1 Palo Trinidad from the Director of Branch Clinics.
Gig Harbor, Washington native Campbell was chosen due to her notable stellar performance and innovative leadership skills as well as ongoing support of staff and community members, most notably as the co-founder and president of Sailors Against Sexual Harassment and Assault (S.A.S.H.A.). Campbell’s effort in leading the S.A.S.H.A. program has provided sexual harassment and assault awareness throughout the area with command and community involvement. Her efforts have also garnered interest from senior Navy officials.
Other Sailor of the Year nominees were HM2 James Thayer of Director of Medical Services, HM2 Christopher Kline with Director of Surgical Services, HM2 Carloconrado Limos of Director Clinical Support Services, Personnel Specialist 2nd Class Austin Zambrano with Director for Administration, HM2 Austin Rogers with Director Branch Clinics, and HM2 Kenneth Nhan with Director Branch Clinics.
Cross, a Milwaukee, Oregon native, was recognized for his role as NHB’s Urgent Care Clinic assistant leading petty officer in helping lead the 24-hour clinic of 48 staff members with 15 junior enlisted Sailors in supporting 11 providers in delivering patient-centered care to approximately 20,000 patients from October, 2016, to September, 2017.
Junior Sailor of the Year nominees also recommended were HM3 Jennelle Jones of Director for Surgical Services and HM3 Joseph Alvis with Director for Administration.
Fuentes, from Pasadena, California, showcased her diverse radiologic technician skills in performing 770 diagnostic exams, 26 fluoroscopic exams, 10 Main Operating Room procedures and 111 computed tomography exams while greatly reducing the necessary amount of radiation administered to patients by following the ALARA – As Low As Reasonably Achievable – principle.
Blue Jacket of the Year nominees included HN Heather Plummer with Director of Nursing Service, HN Megan Decker of Director of Medical Services, Logistics Specialist Seaman Shelby Linton with Director for Administration, HN Jack Shepard with Director Branch Clinics, and HN Kristina Sweeney of Director Branch Clinics.
