PANAMA CITY, Florida – A Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division Scientist Denton Woods joins the U.S. Navy Selected Reserve to serve as an Engineering Duty Officer Nov. 15, 2017.
University of North Texas alum and native of Ennis, Texas, Dr. Denton Woods said his decision to join the U.S. Navy is probably the same reason a lot of people decide to join.
“My decision to join the U.S. Navy is probably the same as most people who join the military: love of our country, a desire to serve, a chance to see the world, and to be part of something bigger than yourself,” said Woods. “In my current job doing basic and applied science, we do not often have the opportunity to work directly with the Fleet. This will be a great chance for me to see that side of the Navy.”
At NSWC PCD, Woods currently works on a Navy sonar simulator known as PC SWAT. He said there would be some overlap of his separate career positions, even though his work for each position will be different. In addition, Woods said he believes the Reserves will afford him the opportunity to enhance his leadership skills.
“I feel the experience from each job will enhance one another,” said Woods. “My current profession is very technical and lacks a leadership component. The Reservist position, however, will allow me an opportunity to hone my leadership skills and expand my knowledge base.”
