The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport hosted its 31st annual International Day — “Celebrating our Diversity” — on Nov. 7, 2017.
The event featured 13 displays that offered opportunities for attendees to learn about the many different cultural backgrounds of their co-workers.
Samples of ethnic foods and decorated displays represented 12 countries, including: China, Great Britain, Greece, India, Iraq, Japan, Lebanon, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, United States, and Vietnam. A table featuring Native American artifacts and culture was also part of this year’s event.
Live music provided by Navy Band Northeast’s Protocol Combo added to the festive atmosphere of the event. Traditional and native instruments — the guitar, bongos, congas, tambourines and trumpet — were on display. Chief Three Horses, aka Donald Sly of Naval Station Newport Public Works Department, led a Native American drumming circle that featured music and chanting performed by the Soaring Eagle Singers.
“This annual event is a great example of people from very diverse backgrounds coming together to embrace each other’s cultures,” said Michelle Eddy of the Corporate Operations Department, who organized the event. “NUWC Division Newport’s International Day is a way for our employees to celebrate and learn about each other and absolutely would not be as successful as it is without all of the volunteers who make this event so enjoyable.”
Coordinated by the Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Office, with support from NUWC Division Newport’s Civilian Morale, Welfare and Recreation, the event is a favorite with Division Newport employees and was very well attended.
NUWC Division Newport, part of the Naval Sea System Command, is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Wash.
