The Submarine Learning Center (SLC) announced its 2017 Sailor of the Year (SOY) Nov. 17.

Electrician’s Mate (Nuclear) 1st Class Christopher Wyatt of Naval Submarine Training Center Pacific (NSTCP) Det. Guam was selected as the SOY for the SLC domain.

Wyatt is a Virtual Interactive Display Equipment (VIDE) Nuclear Simulation instructor; firefighting instructor; command career counselor; command fitness leader; command financial specialist; and command master training specialist coordinator. He played a key role in the development and implementation of two new trainers including the VIDE and a portable mobile fire-fighting trainer, increasing operational readiness of Sailors both on the waterfront and within the command.

“Volunteering to serve at the ‘tip of the spear,’ he is one of the reasons why Forward Deployed Naval Forces submarines remain ever ready to execute their mission,” stated Capt. A. C. Hertel, NSTCP’s commanding officer, in his nomination letter.

Wyatt also led a complete overhaul of the command fitness program and implemented a revitalized master training specialist program.

As the SLC SOY, Wyatt will compete with other Sailors within the Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) domain for selection as the NETC Sailor of the Year.

The SOY program was established in 1972 and recognizes individual Sailors who best represent the dedicated enlisted professional Sailors at each command.

The Submarine Learning Center's mission is the creation, coordination, and execution of the future training and education vision for the Submarine Force. It is accountable for all undersea curriculums, training delivery methodologies, and for developing and maintaining professional development continuums for all undersea warfare officers and ratings to include electronics technician (communications and navigation), fire control technician, sonar technician, machinist's mate (auxiliary and weapons), missile technician, and all nuclear training ratings.
