MUÑIZ AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Puerto Rico. (Nov. 6, 2017) – Airmen with the 156th Force Support Squadron working collectively with the Army National Guard and civilian mortuary services assisted forensic pathologists, Nov. 6, at the Instituto de Ciencias Forenses, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The 156th FSS services Airmen have formed the Fatality Search and Recovery Team (FSRT) to work side by side with local agencies.
The FSRT allows service members to take pictures, gather evidence and handle the collection of remains of fatalities in the area.
“The primary mission of the Fatality Search and Recovery Team, during this emergency, is to support the Institute of Forensic Science of Puerto Rico by assisting with autopsies, taking pictures of fatalities, assisting taking X-rays and taking DNA samples,” said 1st Lt. Emire Rodriguez, 156th FSS FSRT officer in charge. “Mortuary operations is part of our services career field, and this is the perfect opportunity to train in this specific duty.”
When members of the FSRT return from a mission they assist forensic specialists with autopsies and documentation of each fatality.
“Working with the forensic doctors is a great experience because the process helps families receive their loved one, so they can have closure with their family member,” said Staff Sgt. Juan Serrano, a team leader with the 156th FSS FSRT.
The 156th FSS FSRT continues to work collectively with the 246th Mortuary Company Army Reserve and the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team as the need for assistance in Puerto Rico is still required.
