HOMESTEAD AIR RESERVE BASE, Florida – Special Operations Command South’s Commander U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Collin P. Green was promoted to the rank of rear admiral (upper half) during a ceremony Dec. 1, 2017, at Homestead Air Reserve Base, Florida.

U.S. Southern Command Commander Adm. Kurt W. Tidd served as the presiding officer for the ceremony.

“This is an opportunity to recognize, obviously the achievements, the accomplishments of an individual, but a promotion is more than that,” said Tidd.

“This is where we recognize, that not only have you done important things successfully. Not only have you been able to lead, inspire and encourage your team to come together and do good effective work, but the organization believes that you have continued capabilities – you have continued utility – there’s still some more work that we expect out of you,” said the USSOUTHCOM commander.

The promotion comes after Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in March announced that the president had nominated Green, a U.S. Navy SEAL and a Bowie, Maryland native, for appointment to the rank.

“To me promotion ceremonies are about gratitude,” said Green. “Hopefully you’ll feel my gratitude to a great family, teammates here, and not here, who have helped and supported myself and my family tremendously along the way.”

“Moving forward, I remain committed to try and live up to the SEAL Ethos,” said Green of the words printed on the back of the ceremony’s program. “It talks about service above self, loyalty, humility, innovation. We are always in the fight – no quit – and earning my trident and my seat at my place of work daily.”

As SOCSOUTH’s commander, Green is responsible for overseeing the planning, employment, and command of U.S. Special Operations Forces in Latin America and the Caribbean in support of USSOUTHCOM.

“I desire to be nowhere else than here and I am extremely proud of all we do in service and defense of our nation,” said Green, addressing all the SOCSOUTH members in attendance.

Green became SOCSOUTH’s 15th commander last year on March 4, 2016.

Green’s promotion to rear admiral (upper half) derives from more than 31 years of dedicated service at sea and ashore.
