Army Reserve Maj. Matt Goodwin holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal/social justice and a master’s degree in public safety administration from Lewis University in Darien. He is already a certified police officer and gang enforcement officer in the state of Illinois and has even commanded a military police company in Ramadi, Iraq.
Even among seasoned police officers, receiving this additional certification is a significant achievement that few manage to attain.
“We set up very high standards for someone to become certified” said Ed Wojcicki, executive director of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, who presented the certification. “What it means is that they really are at the top level of what we consider to be a 21st century police chief.”
With approximately 900 police agencies across Illinois, only 79 police chiefs hold the prestigious certification. “It’s unusual really, as [Goodwin is] probably the first one who’s in the military who has achieved this certification” Wojcicki said.
Goodwin serves as the operations officer for the Army Reserve’s 206th Regional Support Group, in Springfield.
“I’m glad to be here [and] glad to continue to serve my country” said Goodwin. “The mantra of the military police corps is to assist, protect and defend, and that’s what we’re here to do.”
In his civilian career Goodwin also serves as the staff operations and training officer for the Army Reserve’s 416th Theater Engineer Command, also in Darien.
He lives there with his wife and extended family.
