    194th Wing

CAMP MURRAY, Wash.—Senior Master Sgt. Damian Smith has been named as the 194th Wing’s new First Sergeant.

Smith has a 22-year career with the United Sates Air Force, with 17 years spent at Camp Murray. His career has taken him all over the globe to duty stations in Korea and Turkey and a deployment to Qatar. When asked about his career, Smith stated that it has been “22 years of opportunity. It has just been awesome.”

In addition to his distinguished military career Smith has pursued another passion of his in law enforcement. Smith has spent 15 years as a patrol officer, detective and supervisor. He describes his civilian career as “challenging but rewarding,” and said he loves the opportunity to meet new people and help them in their time of need, which is something that is in line with his desire to serve as a First Sergeant, where he has the opportunity to help and serve his fellow Airmen.

Smith said that he is “proud to be at the Wing. I’ve seen it come full circle from its humble beginnings to one of the premier Wings in all of the Air National Guard.” He is excited to “help push the Wing into the next step in making our mark on history.”

As the incoming First Sergeant, Smith has goals and priorities already established. His first priority is to “enable the commander and command chief to meet their priorities.” His second priority is to “positively influence the careers of the Airmen in his care and ensure that they are, as our motto states, always ready!”

Smith is excited for the opportunity to serve the Airmen that are charged to his care. His leadership style was developed over his 22 years in the Air Force and 15 years on the police force. He describes his leadership style as “situational leadership.” He believes that leadership is something that is “balanced and adjustable to the audience and situation while always keeping the mission foremost in mind.”

“At the end of the day when Airmen leave us, they should leave better than the way we got them,” he said.
