Jon Safstrom’s final flight as an Air National Guard F-16 pilot and commander of the distinguished unit. Fellow airmen, along with close family and friends all looked upward into the skies as their respected counterpart flew his revered F-16 Fighting Falcon, tail number ‘410’ over the 148 FW for one last time.
Looking to future historic events for the wing, leadership will change hands on Dec. 3, 2017, marking the end of Col. Jon Safstrom’s 2-year tenure as Wing Commander, and the beginning of the next chapter of Col. Christopher Blomquist’s career as he steps into his new role.
Blomquist has been a member of the 148 FW since 1992, taking on numerous leadership roles in all facets of wing operations and is prepared to take on the role of wing commander.
“The 148th is an outstanding organization and I am honored to lead it into the future. Serving our airmen in this new capacity and working with our community leaders is a sincere honor. The 148th will continue to excel and increase its already outstanding reputation,” said Blomquist.
Although Safstrom’s military flying career has come to a close, his tenure in leadership will continue as he assumes the role of Assistant Adjutant General - Air with the Minnesota National Guard. He will accept promotion to Brigadier General on Dec. 3, 2017.
As the Assistant Adjutant General, he will assist in the oversight and leadership of Minnesota Air National Guard units. He will work to deploy primary strategic objectives to maintain the two high-quality Air National Guard Wings assigned to the State of Minnesota – the 148th Fighter Wing and the 133rd Airlift Wing.
“I am truly looking forward to continuing to serve the Minnesota National Guard in my new role while advocating for our two outstanding flying wings and their Airmen,” said Safstrom.
