In his speech, Tatum expressed his excitement about the units upcoming mission change from U.S. Northern Command to U.S. Southern Command.
Harrell had served as commanding general of the unit since September 2014 and previously served as its deputy commander and operations officer (G3). In his closing remarks, Harrell emphasized the incredible job he thought that the 167th TSC had done in earning a reputation consistent with the unit’s motto, “They rely on us.”
“You’ve accomplished an awful lot,” said Harrell, addressing the unit. “They rely on us, and I knew I could always rely on you.”
Harrell is moving on to be the Army Materiel Command assistant deputy commanding general - Army National Guard at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.
The unit also welcomed a new senior enlisted leader during a change of responsibility.
Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Stallings comes to the 167th after serving as a command sergeant major for several brigade and group level organizations, including a deployment to Iraq. Stallings brings the experience of his 32 years of service to the organization.
Command Sgt. Maj. William H. Jones leaves the 167th for retirement after more than 30 years in the military, both on active duty and in the Alabama Army National Guard. Jones had served as the senior enlisted advisor for the 167th since September 2012. Prior to that, he served as the Alabama National Guard state command sergeant major.
The change of command and change of responsibility ceremony was held in typical military fashion with the passing of the command’s colors between the outgoing and incoming commanding generals and the passing of an Army saber from one command sergeant major to the next.
